Back when I used to do family therapy the subject of family nudity would come up. In other words, is it okay for parents to be naked in front of their kids and does the family do things together in the nude? (Nude here in no way means anything sexual going on.)
Some examples include:
1. The family swimming/ hot-tubbing together nude.
2. Mom/ Dad freely leaving the shower nude in plain view.
3. Coming out of the bedroom nude to check on dinner, get laundry, etc.
4. Urinating or having a bowel movement with the restroom door open.
The research tells us that nude-togetherness among family members had no adverse effect on development or sexuality.
The lack of family nude exposure seemed to produce trauma later in life when the adult child had to see their parents nude for the first time in a care-giver setting.
Your thoughts? I would be very interested.

Interesting subject, my best friend has a 16 yr old son and a 15 yr old daughter and when we went to Vegas last month we started talking about it. She is ALWAYS nude. She has always been one of those parents who will get out of the shower or get ready for work partially or undressed around her childrenand there is nothing wrong with it. She is from England and that was how she was raised. Myself I don't walk around nude in my home, probably due to the fact when I was growing up it would have been "wrong" (my parents are CRAZY).

I am personally not for it at all. Call me old fashioned but i would not want my kid to see my romping through the house butt ass naked! I think some privacy is important as well as who is seeing your body.
I understand your question as being non sexual....but let me ask you this. Part of sexual attraction is seeing the nakedness. If it becomes routine and brought up in a enviorment where its the norm.....is it possible to every really become attracted sexually by a naked person later in life?

Lips...okay, I am getting out the journals and text books for this. Yes, I think OVER exposure to nudity does NOT effect being sexual healthy later. However, here is an issue. What if boy, 13, is sexually aroused by his nude mother. Not that mom is being a perv, just the 13 year old see her "parts" and nature takes it course. Does this cause mal-functioning sexually later???

Shelli, that is the counter-arguement to free-for-all family nudity. Yes, family nudity may be "okay." But, as a psychologist I cannot but wonder what happens to a young male whose sexual awakening revolves around his mother or sister. And what does this do to his future marriage? I have been doing some research on this topic and have discovered there is very little material.

Sexual awareness starts at a very young age. With hormones raging and wires not quite connected properly yet, could in some cases cause arousal in abnormal situations. If one was to act out the sexual impulses...thats when life gets peverted and twisted.
In most cases i don't think a person will act on it nor be scarred for life as a result of the arousal. I believe its the discovery of our sexuality and a growth process.
How about the theory that men who are attracted to womens breasts is a result of being breast fed as a baby. To me thats a fallacy.

Yes, I have read some on that theory: Breast feed males grow up to very much enjoy suckling their partner's breasts. Here is the research problem with that: It becomes VERY difficult to measure non-breast feed males "time" at the nipple when they are adults. And also, what qualifies an adult male to be a "breast man?" How the heck do you measure that? So, I have to agree with your brilliant assumption.
Now, to get REALLY controversial! There is more evidence that BAD potty training causes sexual mal-functioning than family nudity! Thoughts on that one, Lips???Labbra... sembra che tu stia seguendo un corso di psicologia!

Potty training......always trying to push that envelope a little harder aren't you doc? Ok, i will give a shot on my theory.
I don't think that there is any comparison to nudity and potty training as far as making a person sexually dysfunctional. If a child is brought up in an environment where nudity is common in the household then it does not tamper with the psyche.
I can see the effects on potty training causing a bit more trauma. It is about the sudden change that we are forced to adapt to. Not only the change, but it's the first real mile stone we face in life.
How a parent handles that change is paramount to a child learning to accept it. A child needs to be eased into the transition and build that trust with the parents that its ok.
If a parent comes on too harshly the repercussion can cause trauma on a child. Trauma can be associated and acted out in regards to sexual dysfunction later in life.
It is amazing and how sexual desires are acted out in regards to the lifestyle we are brought up in. It seems to be the coping mechanism used to deal with something that was never quite understood on a mental level.
To take it a step further, look at the serial killers. Many of these serial killers lived a childhood that was very dysfunctional. They lash out at people for the resentment that has festered in them, a lifetime.

Non penso che ci sia alcun paragone con la nudità e l'uso del vasino per quanto riguarda il rendere una persona sessualmente disfunzionale. Se un bambino cresce in un ambiente in cui la nudità è comune in casa, ciò non altera la psiche.
Vedo che gli effetti sull'uso del vasino causano un po' più di trauma. Riguarda il cambiamento improvviso a cui siamo costretti ad adattarci. Non solo il cambiamento, ma è il primo vero traguardo che affrontiamo nella vita.
Il modo in cui un genitore gestisce questo cambiamento è fondamentale affinché un bambino impari ad accettarlo. Un bambino ha bisogno di essere facilitato nella transizione e di costruire quella fiducia con i genitori che va bene.
Se un genitore si comporta in modo troppo duro, le ripercussioni possono causare traumi al bambino. Il trauma può essere associato e messo in atto in relazione alla disfunzione sessuale più avanti nella vita.
È sorprendente il modo in cui i desideri sessuali vengono messi in atto rispetto allo stile di vita in cui siamo cresciuti. Sembra essere il meccanismo di coping utilizzato per affrontare qualcosa che non è mai stato del tutto compreso a livello mentale.
Per fare un ulteriore passo avanti, guarda i serial killer. Molti di questi serial killer hanno vissuto un'infanzia molto disfunzionale. Si scagliano contro le persone per il risentimento che li ha tormentati per tutta la vita.

You and I should go into practice together! You are very, very right. IF the potty training parent is TOO anxious, it has long lasting effects on the kids.
If parents are pushing potty training, getting very angry, very frustrated, yelling, etc...it really screws a kid up...or at least has the potential to.IO spingo la busta!

Se i genitori insistono sull'uso del vasino, si arrabbiano molto, sono molto frustrati, urlano, ecc... il bambino rovina davvero tutto... o almeno ha il potenziale per farlo. -
