Did she try using an USB mouse? If yes, did that one work? Depending on the operating system that she has installed it might be worth having a look in the system preferences/control panel and see if the touchpad settings are correct and the drivers installed.

I just looked it up and this is what I found:
If the mouse/touchpad is not working, ensure that it is turned on. Press and hold the blue "Fn" key located in the lower left hand corner of the keyboard. and tap the "F7" key one time.
A message should flash across the bottom center of the screen stating "touchpad enabled".

I uninstalled her Synaptic pointing divide and downloaded the new one and it works now.
