You don't sound dumb at all. I totally understand where you are coming from. I must admit to being totally confused by all the NBL, NBA, MLB and many other acronyms that I'm not too sure of.
This one would be football. Chelsea finished top of the premier league last season and they won the FA (Football Association) Cup and they play Manchester United because they came 2nd in the premier league. The Community Shield (formerly known as the Charity Shield) is the opening match of the season and generally will be the FA Cup winners against the winners of the Premier League but as Chelsea won both, they can't play themselves so Man United come in as their opponents for being 2nd in the league.
The Charity Shield plays a big role for the Football Association to raise funds for different charities throughout England.
I hope that helps and maybe you can help me with all these US acronyms.
