Stage 1 profile

Major surprise in the first stage of the Tour de France, Mike Teunissen from Jumbo-Visma beat Peter Sagan in the sprint after favourite Dylan Groenewegen was involved in a crash with 1 km left. Teunissen becomes the first Dutch rider since 1989 to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France.

This stage will surely lead to some changes in the general classification, but Teunissen could retain his yellow jersey as team Jumbo-Visma are expected to do very well and even win the stage. Today's stage 3 takes the riders from Belgium to France through a series of hills, this will probably be too much for most of the sprinters so the winner should be a classics rider, a puncher. Superb victory for Julian Alaphilippe today, he attacked on the steepest climb of the day with 16 km left and he never looked back. The Frenchman grabbed the stage win and also the yellow jersey as Teunissed arrived with a delay of almost five minutes. In other news, Egan Bernal gained 5 seconds on team-mate Geraint Thomas on the final ascent of just 500m before the line.

Stage 5 profile

Peter Sagan finally grabbed his first victory at this year's Tour, the pure sprinters had remained behind because of the last two climbs and Sagan dominated the sprint within a reduced bunch. Alaphilippe remains in yellow for another day, but it will be very difficult for him to retain the jersey at the end of tomorrow's stage.

The first mountain stage of this year's Tour is coming up today and it will surely be brutal for the riders. They will have to go through seven categorized climbs, and three of them are first-category ascents. Stage 6 profile

Stage 6 final climb

Dylan Teuns and Giulio Ciccone were the only ones from the breakaway that made it to the finish ahead of the bunch, and each of them won something. Teuns grabbed the stage win as he was stronger on the final ramp, while Ciccone grabbed the yellow jersey despite a strong finish from Julian Alaphilippe. We'll see whether team Trek Segafredo will fight to defend this yellow jersey, considering that their leader, Richie Porte, is still well-placed in the general classification. 

Geraint Thomas was the strongest among the favourites, he attacked in the final kilometer but only gained a few seconds on the others. Vincenzo Nibali and Romain Bardet were the most important victims of the final climb, they arrived around a minute behind Thomas.

We had another breakaway win today and Daryl Impey was the man who took it, he rode clear of his breakaway companions along with Tiesj Benoot and then defeated the Belgian in the sprint. In the main bunch the only piece of action came on the last climb, when Romain Bardet launched a feeble attack that was quickly cancelled by Team Ineos.

Crazy stage today because of the crosswind, Team Ineos and Deceuninck-QuickStep put the hammer down and they caught out quite a bit of important people, including Thibaut Pinot, Jakob Fuglsang and Mikel Landa. There was a big surprise at the sprint as well, Wout van Aert was incredibly strong and defeated Elia Viviani at the line. Giulio Ciccone dropped from second to tenth in the general classification as he finished in the third group.

Stage 12 profile

Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), Pello Bilbao (Astana Pro Team) and Gregor Mühlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) were the strongest out of today's massive 42-man breakaway, they rode clear of their companions and got to sprint for the victory. That sprint was expertly won by Simon Yates, he positioned himself perfectly and launched himself towards the line at the perfect time. As for the general classification contenders, they all had a quiet day ahead of tomorrow's individual time trial.

We had quite a surprise today, Julian Alaphilippe not only that he retained his yellow jersey but he blew everybody apart and even won the stage! It is true that the pre-race favourite Wout van Aert suffered a pretty bad crash and crossed the line in an ambulance, but Alaphilippe's performance was majestic. Geraint Thomas finished second and another pleasant surprise was Rigoberto Uran, who finished just 12 seconds behind the Ineos leader. Richie Porte, Steven Kruijswijk, Thibaut Pinot and Enric Mas also had good rides, while Nairo Quintana and Egan Bernal lost over a minute each.

Quite a few surprising events today on the climb towards the Col du Tourmalet, starting with the incredible performance from Julian Alaphilippe, who retained his yellow jersey as he finished second behind the strongest man of the day, Thibaut Pinot. Moreover, Alaphilippe even added another 36 seconds behind him and Geraint Thomas as last year's winner got dropped in the final kilometer of the climb. 

It was a disastrous day for Movistar, they worked at the head of the group but then Nairo Quintana got dropped and lost over three minutes, so their only man in the top ten of the general classification is now veteran Alejandro Valverde. Team Jumbo-Visma looked quite solid and Steven Kruijswijk looks quite capable of going for the overall victory this year. But who can beat Julian Alaphilippe?

Stage 15 profile

Simon Yates grabbed his second stage victory at this year's Tour de France thanks to another courageous breakaway attack but the real winner of the day is Thibaut Pinot, he attacked from the main group, gained some time on all his rivals and moved up to fourth place in the general classification. Julian Alaphilippe showed his first signs of weakness on the final climb but he remains in the lead for now. At this point I guess any of the top six could win it, quite impressive performance from Emanuel Buchmann as well. 

In other news, Mikel Landa attacked from the penultimate climb and his courage paid off, he bounced up into the top ten of the general classification while Nairo Quintana has sunk further down.

What a great and open race the tour has been so far...and I'm a Froome fan?

Alaphilippe has been beyond any expectations really, Thomas maybe not in the last year's form but that just make's it even more exiting.

I'm really pumped for the third week...never been a French fan in many other sports but for what the Tour de France is and the fact a Frenchman haven't won it for like 35y I really hope some of them could do it this time...and particularly Pinot, the guy is in a staggering form in the mountains and just the fact he lost that 1m40sec in that flat, side winded stage separated him from being like a few seconds away from wearing the yellow. 

Definitely he's my favorite and I just hope he could carry over that form into the third week..the rest of the GS favs will have a lot of trouble if he's able to do that..well at least I hope so?

I have no idea, it's the most unpredictable Tour de France in decades. I support Pinot as well, he is in awesome shape and it's a real shame he lost so much time in that flat stage. The third week of a Grand Tour is always tricky, we could always see one of the favourites have a bad day.

Caleb Ewan grabbed his second stage victory, the Australian sprinter was by far the fastest in today's finish. As for the general classification guys, Geraint Thomas (Team Ineos) and Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) were involved in crashes, the Welshman was able to pull through but the Dan was forced to abandon the Tour de France.

Nairo Quintana finally had a good day and he made the most of it, he launched a devastating attack from the breakaway on the Col du Galibier and finished over 1 minute ahead of second-placed Romain Bardet, who did get the best climber jersey at the end of the day. Quintana also bounces up to seventh place in the general classification, where Egan Bernal also took a leap forward thanks to his successful attack on the Galibier. Alaphilippe got dropped on the final slopes of that climb, but he did well to rejoin Geraint Thomas and company on the following descent.

Stage 19 profile

Today's stage was cut short by incredibly bad weather in Val d'Isere, but we still got to see the special-category climb to Col d'Iseran and a devastating attack from Egan Bernal. The Colombian gained just over two minutes over Julian Alaphilippe, and the Frenchman was denied the opportunity to close that gap in the downhill as the race got stopped. Technically we don't have a stage winner today, the timer was stopped at the summit of the Col de l'Iseran. 

In other news Thibaut Pinot had to abandon the race in tears, he was unable to compete today due to a muscle tear on his left hamstring. The general classification is supposed to look something like this (not yet official!):

Caleb Ewan was the fastest once again, he beat everybody in the sprint on Champs Elysees and captured a great win. As for the general classification, there was no drama for Bernal, he retained the yellow jersey and got to celebrate a historic achievement. Peter Sagan also achieved something remarkable by winning his seventh green jersey, while Romain Bardet rescued a disappointing Tour with the best climber jersey.
