I have seen things like this in movies and documentaries but never really heard of anyone actually trying.
Would you believe a 63-year-old man with a hernia plunged a butter knife into his abdomen to try to fix the problem, and later put a lit cigarette in the wound because he was frustrated with this hernia, and he didn't want to wait any longer for the medical procedure...?
I wonder if this is a small example of how failed our health care system or just an insane man who stabs himself because he was so sick of waiting for the surgery went nuts from the frustration...
Either way he is now getting immediate surgery.
It's one hell of a way to do it if that was the reason, but it worked

The only self torturing I can remember is pulling out most of my teeth when I was kid.

This is why we have ER's. If you're having acute pain by all means go! they won't reject you, they'll hammer out the financial details later. It's amazing he didn't bleed to death or at least become septic. I don't suppose alcohol was involved was it?
